Moon morphology : interpretations based on Lunar Orbiter photography
Abstract
The present volume constitutes a photographic atlas of lunar surface features, based on Lunar Orbiter photographs, plus explanatory text. Photographs are grouped in order to illustrate and analyze specific morphological types, and the features are treated as products of an evolving planetary body rather than as data points. In contrast to previous lunar atlases, craters are classified according to the appearance of their floors, walls, and rims. The specific categories examined include crater shapes in plan, crater floors, their walls, their rims, crater groups, positive-relief features (domes, ridges, rings), negative-relief features (mainly rilles), albedo contrasts, and maria and other plains-forming units. Appendices present angle data for the plates and overall views of selected regions and features, including Orientale Basin, the craters Petavious, Copernicus, Aristarchus, and Vitello, the two Messier craters, the Harbinger Mountains, and the Marius Hills.
