Flat spin recovery of a spinning satellite
Abstract
Procedures for flat spin recovery of the ESA METEOSAT satellite during transfer orbit are defined and compared. The maneuver is made by means of thrusters which generate torque vectors that are oriented closely to the satellite transverse plane. Constraints on the torque direction are derived, based on rigid body motion. The maneuvers can start before a pure flat spin is reached. The influence of inertia distribution on flat spin detection and recovery maneuver is shown. Simulations are made, including the effect of energy dissipation due to internal motion with viscous friction, to verify the procedures.
