Present and future capability of millimeter wave pumped paramps
Abstract
The development of extremely low-noise parametric amplifiers with broad bandwidth capabilities in the microwave and millimeter wave region is discussed. In particular, solid-state parametric amplifiers in the 35-GHz and the 60-GHz band, based on varactors with high cutoff frequencies (above 1000 GHz at zero volt bias), are considered. The use of advanced varactors in frequency multipliers up to 300 GHz is also mentioned. Units described include a commercial parametric amplifier covering the 3.7- to 4.2-GHz range and having a noise temperature of 45 K, a cryogenically cooled X-band system with a bandwidth in excess of 1000 MHz, and a nondegenerate parametric amplifier that is electronically tunable over a 1200-MHz range, with a noise figure of less than 4.0 decibels.
