Gas pressure variation in a clarinet-type barrel
Abstract
An experimental gun of 20 mm in caliber equipped with a clarinet-type barrel was used to investigate the variation in gas pressure at both the breech and projectile base. A computing model based on gas dynamics was established and used for comparing the experimental results achieved with those obtained in the field of conventional interior ballistics. Only in a few cases the latter can be regarded as a good approximation with respect to true conditions. Parametric studies of the change in the geometry of the combustion chamber, cone angle in the barrel, and rotating band of the projectile allow estimation, qualitatively and quantitatively, of the effects on the total variation in gas pressure within the barrel.
