Discrete and diffuse auroral displays in the dawn sector
Abstract
Data on discrete and diffuse auroral and airglow activity in the dawn sector of the auroral oval during weak and medium-intensity magnetic substorms are reported and discussed. Discrete auroral shapes prevail on the poleward edge of diffuse airglow during weak substorms, but a latitude discontinuity takes shape between the discrete forms with increasing substorm activity. Diffuse airglow progresses poleward, despite the discontinuity, toward noon, without remaining aligned with curves of constant L.
