The alliance of practical and analytical insights into the nonlinear problems of fluid mechanics
Abstract
The application of rigorous mathematics to problems in fluid mechanics is considered, taking into account the justification of tentative descriptions, the confirmation that idealized models of physical processes are free from extraneous catastrophes, and the provision of useful qualitative information that is inaccessible by any other means. An application of variational methods in the case of vortex rings is discussed. Attention is given to dynamical equations and discontinuous vorticity. An application of degree theory related to the bifurcation of viscous flows is also described.
