Excitation rate in a weakly ionized plasma in a strong external field
Abstract
A weakly ionized plasma in a strong electric field is considered in the case when inelastic collisions of electrons with atoms have a significant effect on the electron distribution function. An expression is obtained for the atomic excitation rate corresponding to the socalled infinite 'sink' approximation. Calculations of the excitation rate of argon atoms are compared with numerical results. It is shown for the case of strong external fields, that the electron distribution function in the infinite sink approximation does not depend on inelastic collision frequency for a wide range of energies.
