Rapid filming of the failure process in polymer materials
Abstract
It has been demonstrated that high-speed cinema photography can be used to investigate the processes of dynamic failure in materials with high elasticity. An electrical synchronization system coordinates the initiation of filming with breakage of the specimen. The cinemagrams permit the calculation of the rates of longitudinal and transverse deformation. The method has been used to investigate the failure of a synthetic rubber.
