Analysis of magnetic suspension
Abstract
Magnetic bearings are considered for the frictionless suspension of high speed rotating cylinders for energy storage. The inherent instability of magnetic suspension and the required feedback control system are discussed. A three-loop suspension system is described. An ancillary result shows that tapering of the magnetic pole pieces at the gap is detrimental to the magnetic suspension.
