Range instrumentation radars
Abstract
Crucial system-level developments in range instrumentation radars (RDR) over the past decade are reviewed. System and subsystem improvements discussed include: use of pulse Doppler for improved RDR resolution and clutter control, digital range systems, new calibration techniques (on-axis tracking, new boresight telescopes, star calibration, ranging), RDR functions controlled by a system computer, dual-frequency tracking. Some specific RDR systems are described (British ST 858, Italian RIS-4 C/A, French Adour Radar, U.S. Trail-X radar, AN/TPQ-39(V), and RIR 778) with tabulated data presented. Views on potential mission requirements that will shape RDR system requirements in the future are presented.
