Limits of the applicability of the Kirchhoff approximation for the calculation of reflector antennas
Abstract
Two Kirchhoff methods for calculating the radiation patterns of reflector antennas: (1) the determination of field distribution in the aperture, and (2) the determination of curent distribution on the reflector, are compared with a method based on the geometrical theory of diffraction, in an effort to evaluate the limits of the applicability of the Kirchhoff methods. The calculations are performed for three types of excitation (amplitude distribution along the front of the reflected plane wave) - uniform, first order null distribution on the antenna edges, and second order null distribution.
