An overview of the Small SHF Satellite Ground Terminal Development Program
Abstract
The Small SHF Satellite Ground Communications Terminal Development Program, contracted to RCA by the U.S. Army Satellite Communications Agency is discussed. The program has produced a new family of quick-reaction TACSATCOM terminals for strategic and tactical satellite communications systems. The highly mobile units provide nodal and non-nodal full-duplex multichannel voice communication links, and will be used over the next five- to ten-year period. Frequency-division multiple access or spread-spectrum multiple access will be used initially, with introduction of time division multiple access expected in the 1980 time frame. The modulation/coding technique consists of differential-encoded phase-shift keying in conjunction with convolutional coding and Viterbi decoding. Service tests of a group of 10 terminals have been completed.
