Which Historical New Stars were Supernovae?

The radio supernova remnants and the historical records of new stars have been investigated in an attempt to identify clearly those records which refer to supernovae. It would appear that of the medley of historical records of new stars from the past two millennia, at most eight describe supernovae while the rest may describe either comets or novae. It is shown that apart from the well-known radio remnants of historical supernovae, only Cas A and RCW 103 are young enough and close enough to the earth to have made a historical recording of the supernova likely, although there are no known records which could correspond to either.
