If the electromagnetic four-potential is expressed as an invariant superposition of 42 symmetry-related field operators, it is possible to account for the experimental value of the fine-structure constant. Such a theory yields the formula ℏ ce²=N(N-1)4π with N=42 the order of the invariance group.
