Extraordinarymode electromagnetic instability with generalized distribution functions
Abstract
The extraordinarymode electromagnetic instability associated with the plasma waves propagating perpendicular to the magnetic field is studied for the class of the plasma distributions of the DoryGuestHarris type. For j⩾2 distributions, the instability may occur in both lowβ and highβ plasmas and is very sensitive to the value of Ω^{2}_{e}/ω^{2}_{pe}. It turns out that the electrostatic instability for the k_{∥}=0 waves is just a special case of the extraordinarymode instability under the condition c→∞.
