X-Ray Scattering from Liquid HELIUM-3.
Abstract
The experiment reported here is an investigation into the structure of liquid He3. X-rays were scattered from a sample of He-3 which was cooled to temperature ranging from 0.05 K to 1.2 K. By measuring the scattered intensity as a function of angle and normalizing it with data collected by scattering from neon gas at 77 K, the structure factor (S(k)), of the liquid was found. The small k structure factor was found to be in rough agreement with the predictions of the Landau theory of Fermi liquids. However, the slope of the data consistently lies below the predicted slope. The data even lies below the predicted lower bound of S(k) (based on the Landau theory of Fermi Liquids). It is speculated that the real source of this difference is the existence of high frequency excitations which have been neglected in the calculations of S(k).
