a Numerical Simulation of the General Circulation of Atmospheric Ozone.
Abstract
The simulated synoptic distributions of total ozone show that, in agreement with the observations, the total ozone maxima and minima in the middle latitudes of both hemispheres coincide respectively with the trough and ridge lines of the eastward-moving baroclinic waves at 500 mb. The time averaged total ozone distribution shows a similar correspondence with the 500 mb stationary waves in middle latitudes, however, both the simulated total ozone and 500 mb geopotential height fields do not display the wavenumber three component which is observed in the northern hemisphere middle latitudes. The time series of the global photochemical production rate of ozone displays a diurnal oscillation. The time series of the global surface destruction rate of ozone and the global-mean total ozone display an exponential asymptotic shape with equilibrium values which are estimated as 26 tons/sec and 274 Dobson units, respectively.
