The effect of turbulence on laser beam quality
Abstract
The ranges of parameters which were investigated are: (1) mean fluid velocity: from zero to 20 meters per second, (2) turbulence Reynolds numbers: to 16,000 (3) velocity turbulence intensities: to 40%, (4) temperature turbulence intensities: to .6%, (5) index of refraction fluctuations: to 3.7 x 10 to the minus sixth power, (6) propagation path length: 23 cm, (7) nominal laser beam diameters: 50mm, 30mm, 14mm and 1.5mm, (8) wave lengths of the laser beams: 632.8nm and 441.6nm, (9) beam diameter integral temperature turbulence scale: D/lambda 1 to D/lambda about 1; and (10) attenuation coefficient: alpha L sub o 1, aL sub o about 1, aL sub o 1.
