An analytical investigation of negative shock waves in a singlephase fluid substance
Abstract
Negative shock waves in a fluid with a sufficiently large specific heat were analyzed. The conservation equations for energy, mass, and momentum are formulated for a normal shock wave. With thermodynamic properties obtained from the MartinHou equation of state, a computer program was developed which numerically solves the governing conservation equations. Fluid properties downstream of the shock are calculated as a function of the upstream properties. The qualitative aspects of the negative shock properties so obtained are compared with theoretical predictions based on the geometry of the shock adiabat in the P upsilon plane.
