Modulation of wind generated waves by long gravity waves
Abstract
Cyclic short wave variations that occur during active generation of the short wave field by wind were investigated. Measurements consisting of wave slope time series were made in laboratory environments allowing the independent generation of two scales of motion. Wave slope was measured locally, and continuously in time with a device utilizing the phenomenon of optical refraction at the air sea interface as the basis for the detection of slope angle. It was found that within the experimental bounds short wave slope energy exhibits a cyclic variation along the long wave profile that is related to that profile and characterized as a modulation.
