Elastic and inelastic diffraction in high energy multiple-scattering theory
Abstract
An exactly soluble infinite channel eikonal model for elastic and diffractive production processes is discussed. It takes into account all orders of production, as required by unitarity. The model allows primitive transitions only between states of neighboring mass and is formally identical to hopping models of electron scattering from a one dimensional lattice. The exchange potential which eikonalizes can be rather general, although here a specific form is chosen for definiteness. The resulting cross sections have several interesting features, including a large diffractive production to elastic cross section ratio, peripherally peaked production profiles, a mass slope correlation, and t structure. The absorptive structure is significantly affected by the presence of the diffractive production channels.
