Continuous hardness testing - A new testing procedure, which can be automated, for the rapid determination of the hardness characteristics of metallic materials
Abstract
The significance of hardness distribution data is briefly considered and conventional discontinuous methods for obtaining such data are critically examined. A description is presented of the development of a continuous procedure for the more rapid determination of hardness distributions, taking into account a structural analysis of hardness testing procedures, a morphological evaluation of the structural elements, and the geometrical form of the penetrator. Approaches for the implementation of the principles of the continuous hardness-testing concept are discussed along with an experimental study of the new procedure in applications involving tests with heat-treated carbon steels, alloy steels, a titanium alloy, and aluminum alloys.
