Combat turn-on problems in Gunn-effect sourcers
Abstract
Ways of coping with the poor cold start responses of Gunn oscillators (failure to operate at design frequency when switched on at low temperatures) are outlined. Four criteria for poor cold start behavior and the reasons behind them are presented. Diode wafer selection at the point of fabrication, with sample diodes from various wafers tested in the oscillator while the output spectrum is monitored on a broadband spectrum analyzer, is recommended at the outset. Backup can be provided by stabilizing the circuit with judicious choices of resistances and conductances to damp out unwanted frequencies without disturbing the operating point. Use of an emitter-follower circuit to program the Gunn bias voltage over temperature variations, with further stabilization of frequency and power, is also suggested.
