Was the Formation of a 20-km-Diameter Impact Crater on the Moon Observed on June 18, 1178?
Abstract
As reported in medieval chronicles, on the evening of June 18, 1178, the upper horn of a new moon split, and from the division a flaming torch sprang up. We interpret this observation in terms of a large impact event which formed the 20-km-diameter crater Giordano Bra no.
