The irrotational waves and the convergence of Levi-Civita's series
Abstract
The existence of irrotational surface waves of finite amplitude, established by Levi-Civita, is extended to the breaking point. It is shown that the breaking height is obtained by mechanical considerations based on the well-known Stokes procedure and therefore on an approach which differs greatly from that of Levi-Civita.
