From hertz to gigahertz - Quartz oscillators
Abstract
Different types of quartz oscillators are described, including temperature-compensated, frequency-controlled, metrological, and surface wave oscillators. Their applications as frequency standards and sensors and their utilization in clocks and watches are discussed together with their performance. Possible future developments leading to improvements in long and short term stability, frequency, and sensitivity (or insensitivity) to external factors such as temperature, pressure, and vibrations are considered.
