Coding and transmission of videophonic imagery
Abstract
The characteristics of experimental systems for long-distance transmission of videophone images in France are presented. A link making use of 2 Mbit/sec TN1 channels has been established between Paris and Lannion. The coding process reduces the output of the digitized videophonic signals from 16 to 2 Mbit/sec for transmission by eliminating redundant information. Two coding systems - conditional and systematic refreshment - differing in treatment of temporal redundancy have been developed. These are discussed in detail, and technical difficulties involved in the digital transmission of videophonic signals are outlined.
