Interacting electromagnetic waves in general relativity
Abstract
In the general theory of relativity electromagnetic waves interact nonlinearly through the field equations. A region of spacetime containing two null electromagnetic waves is considered, and a new class of exact solutions of the EinsteinMaxwell equations is given. The solutions describe two waves following shearfree null geodesics 'twisting' through each other with zero contraction, the twist of one wave being proportional to the field strength of the other.
