The role of time in navigation.
Abstract
Fundamental concepts of time applied in navigation practice are reviewed, and various forms of scientific navigation making use of time concepts are discussed. Use of the basic clock, comparison between clocks, and reliance on a standard time reference are dealt with, with discussion of the time mode, navigation mode, and astro references. Instrumental gyroscopes, radio navigation aids, the directional mode, radars measuring the sum of path transmission times, and universal time systems are discussed. The various techniques and equipments are compared, re their use of a time signal propagated with predictable delay in comparing the time of events observed at different locations.
