A semiconductor laser communication system using pulse-interval modulation
Abstract
A pulse-interval modulation (PIM) technique is described which is essentially an asynchronous pulse position modulation technique. PIM carries signal information in the form of pulse intervals and, in comparison with pulse position modulation, is characterized by a high sampling frequency caused by asynchronous sampling. An experimental semiconductor laser communication system was constructed to transmit color signals and frequency-division multiplexing signals. The modulation and demodulation characteristics are explained, as is the transmission of voices and control signals via the time-sharing PIM system.
