The European Communication Satellite Programme and the Orbital Test Satellite
Abstract
The technological program described was initiated in 1970 to satisfy future needs of the European Post and Communications Administrations and of the European Broadcasting Union in the field of satellite communications. The program covers three-axis stabilized satellite subsystems and communications equipment. The objective is the development and installation of an operational satellite system that would meet the above requirements. The design of a pre-operational vehicle the Orbital Test Satellite (OTS) - is described. It is a stabilized platform with sun-oriented solar arrays which consists of two separate modules: a service module that incorporates most of the support subsystems, and a communications module including repeaters and antennas
