The Skynet System, the Satellite Communications Network Built in Britain
Abstract
The Skynet satellite system is used by the UK to provide reliable military communications between permanent and mobile stations within an area which extends from the British Isles in the west to Singapore and Western Australia in the east. The system employs a geostationary satellite which is placed over the Indian Ocean. The first Skynet satellite was built in the U.S. Skynet II is to be provided by a British company acting as prime contractor in collaboration with a U.S. company. The advantages of satellite communications are considered and attention is given to system deployment, modulation and access methods, and details of spacecraft design and operation.
