Rocket measurements of electron concentration in the lower ionosphere at two European locations.
Abstract
Measurements of electron concentrations in the lower ionosphere are reported for 16 Petrel rocket flights from South Uist, Scotland, and for 3 Skylark rocket flights from Sardinia. Variations of the electron concentration with season, latitude, degree of ionospheric absorption in winter, degree of auroral activity at night, and with solar zenith angle are examined. Possible causes of the observed behavior are discussed and its relationship to the morphology of the Winter Anomaly in ionospheric absorption is demonstrated. Data relating to electron collision frequencies are also presented.
