The Binary X-ray Sources
Abstract
The UHURU satellite (launched in 1970) has provided for the first time the opportunity to survey the entire sky at X-ray energies. The observations have provided new information on many well-known objects, in addition to discovering a large number of hitherto unknown objects. For most of these objects, there were no obvious optical counterparts. Optical identification was made difficult by the poor positional accuracy of the UHURU detectors. Identification, however, has been relatively successful for a class of X-ray objects known as binary X-ray sources. In the present paper, the principal properties of the binary X-ray sources are reviewed, and the model of the phenomenon is discussed.
