Interpretation of clear-sky brightness observations in the ozone absorption bands
Abstract
Results of a numerical solution of the radiant energy transport equation for the simplest models of the atmosphere are compared to observed brightnesses and UV spectropolarimetry data. Diffuse daytime skylight is assumed to compete with sunlight, so that diffuse skylight isophotes have to be calculated when minimal information on optical properties of the atmosphere is available. The subozone solar constant method is recommended for dealing with absorption of light by atmospheric ozone. The angular brightness distribution at different almucantars can be analyzed, by adding components of the scattering functions if atmospheric turbidity is not prohibitively high.
