External potential flow of an incompressible fluid around a body or system of bodies of arbitrary shape
Abstract
Adiabatic irrotational flow of an inviscid incompressible fluid around a body of arbitrary shape or past a system of bodies of arbitrary shape in steady state is investigated, with attention given to the circulation effect. The two-dimensional or three-dimensional hydrodynamic flow field is bounded at the center by a piecewise-smooth system of surfaces of immersed bodies. The set of problems, with boundary conditions specified, is reduced to an equivalent variational problem minimizing the energy functional. Coordinate sequences of solutions of the problems, satisfying boundary conditions and conditions at infinity, are constructed. Flow past a horizontal system comprising three circular cylinders is solved as illustration.
