Vortex flow of a Maxwell fluid
Abstract
An exact solution is obtained for the equations of motion describing the vortex flow of a Maxwell fluid, with the distribution of conservative velocities as given. It is shown that the elasticity of the material prevents viscosity-induced diffusion of vorticity beyond a critical radius r sub c which tends to infinity for a Newtonian fluid. It is noted that at the exterior of a cylinder of radius r sub c whose axis is the vortex in question, the Maxwell fluid flows like an ideal one.
