The cepheid CS Velorum and the cluster Ruprecht 79.
Abstract
New photoelectric and photographic observations show that the 5.9 day Cepheid CS Vel is a probable member of the cluster Ruprecht 79. This cluster has a distance modulus (m - M)v = 14.75 + 0.35 (estimated error) and suffers a reddening = 0.76 + 0.02 (m.e.). The Cepheid CS Vel is observed to have V = 11.70, 4B - = 1.34, and U - = 1.04, from which M<v> = - 3.05 + 0.35, ( B - VA0 = 0.66, and ( U - = 0.36. This absolute magnitude compares satisfactorily with the value of Mv = -3.44 predicted from the P-L-C relation of Sandage and Tammann. In addition to the Cepheid, this cluster appears to contain several other evolved stars. Subject headings: clusters: open - stars: Cepheids - stars: individual - stars: luminosities
