Analysis of a centenary series of magnetic activity indices. III - Is the frequency distribution logarithmic normal
Abstract
A statistical analysis is made of the frequency distribution of K indices and aa indices derived from them. The effect of components of positive conservation in the series of aa indices on the randomness of their frequency distribution is investigated, and logarithmic normal distribution is inferred; geomagnetic activity is found to satisfy the central limit theorem conditions. Distortions of the frequency distributions associated with the 11-yr and 99-yr solar cycles are ascribed to attenuation, and a major role in the modulation of solar wind flux is assigned to the solar coronal holes.
