The response of a pitot tube in the presence of a weak shock wave
Abstract
The response of a pitot tube in the presence of a weak shock wave generated by operating nominally uniform flow axisymmetric nozzles at over-expanded conditions was investigated. Three nozzles with exit plane Mach numbers of 1.98, 2.4, and 2.77 were used in the tests. It was found that a pitot tube can give readings above the local free flow value of the theoretical stagnation pressure downstream of a normal shock when the tube is in the vicinity of a weak shock wave. This effect is the result of the shock pattern produced above the pitot tube by the interaction of the free flow shock and the pitot shock.
