A study of the transient X-ray source A 0620-00.
Abstract
Observations of the transient X-ray source A 0620-00 obtained by the five-band ultraviolet photometric system on board the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite are reported. After correction for reddening, the spectrum resembles that of a blackbody with a temperature of 28,000 K. The best estimate for the degree of reddening is E(B-V) of 0.39. X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical data are combined to construct a model for the system. It is assumed that A 0620-00 is a binary system, that the nongenerate companion is a dwarf, and that the oribtal inclination is zero. The low mass of the system makes a black hole unlikely. The galactic distribution of the transient X-ray sources is calculated.
