Spacelab - Model for international teamwork
Abstract
The Spacelab is an important complement of the Space Shuttle. Together they form a promising return to manned spaceflight on a broader and more economical basis. The Spacelab will be furnished by Western Europe at a development cost of about $400 million. The finally adopted concept was developed by a team of European aerospace firms under the leadership of the West German company ERNO. The two determining design criteria are maximum flexibility and low operating cost. The paper describes the Spacelab and the ways in which these criteria are met.
