Coherent structures in turbulence
Abstract
Contributions to the Southampton Colloquium on coherent structures in turbulence, held in March 1974 are summarized. The basic mechanisms which govern the development, growth and interaction of the large coherent structures found in turbulent shear flows are examined, with emphasis on turbulent mixing processes. Attention is given coherent structures in free shear layers, observations in turbulent jets, boundary layer structure, turbulent pipe flow and models of turbulent flow. The relations of coherent structures to the turbulent energy spectrum and to entrainment and mixing are investigated.
