Nuclear Structure Research Laboratory
Abstract
Considerable emphasis in the experimental program continues on alpha transfer reaction mechanisms and alpha widths of nuclear levels utilizing the reactions (L1-6,d) and (0-16,c-12). In connection with the latter reaction, an interesting comparison was made between alpha decay and alpha transfer in the lead region. The heavy ion detector for the focal plane of the split pole magnetic spectrometer was further refined. In particular, a survey was begun on reactions induced by Na-23 on Si-28. Other areas of research involved heavy ion beams in measurements of excited state quadrupole moments; continuing measurements on highly damped collision processes; and fusion, fission and elastic scattering studies.
