Circumstellar envelopes and mass loss of red giant stars.
Abstract
A review is presented of the physical properties of expanding red-giant envelopes as determined from observations in various spectral regions. Circumstellar absorption lines are considered and a description is given of dust and molecules in the circumstellar envelopes of red giants, taking into account the infrared silicate excess, aspects of polarization, and microwave emission from molecules. Attention is also given to the dependence of mass loss on basic stellar parameters and consequences for stellar evolution.
