Block adaptive DPCM transmission of images
Abstract
The paper describes Block Adaptive DPCM, a variation of delta pulse code modulation which is particularly applicable to encoding of imagery data. It is based on a variable-gain quantizer controlled by a distortion measure of error in the reconstructed data. Being a fixed-rate coding scheme, only a moderate increase in complexity is required. The experimental results presented indicate significantly lower distortion than standard DPCM at low rates (less than 2 bits per pixel).
