Application of transducers to rotating machinery monitoring and analysis
Abstract
Transducers to aid engineers and operators in the efficient operation of machines can also provide vast arrays of data. Due to the machine problems caused by misalignment, eddy current proximity probes can be used to measure machine position changes in running conditions and therefore reduce damage. Proper attachment of transducers, at proper locations, requires close cooperation between the machine manufacturer, the transducer manufacturer and the user. Typical decisions that must be made in selecting transducers and monitors for protection systems on machines are reviewed. A complete, continuous monitoring system on a rotating machine consists of radial vibration, axial position, and speed monitoring of the shaft as well as monitoring of radial and axial vibration on machine cases and piping, with provision for at least periodic checks of machine alignment.
