Design of nonrecursive digital notch filters
Abstract
This paper describes three methods of designing a nonrecursive digital notch filter; linear phase Finite Impulse Response, truncated power series, and whitening. The first approach, available in literature is adopted as a basis for comparison. It is found that the second approach is more favorable in the computation of a narrow band notch filter. The third approach, developed in this paper, is based on the theory of matched filter design, which is well known in the field of signal detection and estimations but not in the field of digital filters. The analysis of the whitening approach and its design considerations are discussed and some important properties of the resulting notch filters explored. For the design of a narrowband notch filter, the third approach requires much less computer time than the other two approaches.
