On the translational velocity of vortex rings
Abstract
An equation is presented for the self-induced translational velocity of a vortex ring, directed normal to the plane of the ring. This theoretical result has been tested by experiments with vortex rings in air reported by Sallet and Widemayer (1974), consisting of hot-wire measurements of ring diameter, core diameter, circulation and translational velocity for rings generated at an orifice 3 inches in diameter from which 28 cubic inches of air were emitted in a period of 17 to 26 milliseconds. The nature of vortex filaments is considered.
