Experimental investigation of vortex rings
Abstract
Two techniques were combined to study vortex rings produced in water in large and small basins: (1) photographic flow visualization using a tracer dye, which allowed the determination of the duration of the various stages of the rings along with their shape and translational velocities, and (2) laser Doppler anemometry which allowed the determination of velocity distributions inside and outside the vortex. The results are presented in a series of photographs, illustrating the different stages of ring vortex development. Laminar-turbulent transition is considered along with the initiation of rippling and folding of the vortices.
